The B-type engine was a gasoline powered 4-ton truck engine, developed based research modeled after the GM Chevrolet 6-cylinder engine. On vehicles for civilian use a BX engine was commonly used, whereas the BQ was used for military weapons carriers. Because it was a large piston displacement engine designed for trucks, the engine was quite heavy, including the clutch mechanism, weighing in at 275kg. Not only the cylinder blocks, but the heads were also made of cast steel, and for the sake of durability all walls of the engine were quite thick.
