The B-type engine was a compact 4-cylinder diesel engine that was developed for the Land Cruiser, and also used on the Dyna truck and Coaster microbus. The B-type did not use any particular special technology, but was developed with the idea of matching it to the different types of vehicles, and to have a good base for future development. Its potential was demonstrated in extending the bore, as well as through fuel-injection systems.
As shown to the right, the model changes from the 40-series to the 60-series were accompanied by engine evolution and increased bore from the B to the 2B, and then to the 3B-type. Eventually the 70-series emerged with the 13B-T-type direct-injection turbo engine. In this process active progress was also made in meeting emissions regulations.
