The F-type Gasoline Engine

Based on the B-type predecessor engine, the F-type engine was born in 1951. It was a 6-cylinder gasoline engine that boasts the longest history of any engine Toyota has produced. This new engine was the first to go into the 20-series. The F-type later received minor improvements, including changes in the compression ratio, and with the change from the FJ55V to the FJ56V the bore was further extended for an increase of 352cc of piston displacement. The 3F-type was further modified to make it lighter and to run with less friction.
In time with the development of the 60-series it was replaced with the 3F-E-type that had electronic controls, which was used in the early models of the 80-series. Eventually to cope with strict emissions regulations and to further boost the output, the DOHC 24-valve 1FZ-FE-type engine was developed.
